Strengthening Capacity for Participatory Management of Indigenous Livestock to Foster Agriculture Innovation in Eastern, Southern and Western Africa

Summer School

Capacity Strengthening on Management of Indigenous Livestock

Indigenous livestock (IL) products and production resources are in a declining trend. Most of the livestock is kept under low input systems where the application of innovative livestock technologies (ILT) is limited by the lack of knowledge and enthusiasm by the general public, including rural communities, civil society organizations (CSOs) and policy makers.  This predisposes IL to genetic erosion and suboptimal performance. Consequently, stakeholders along the IL value chain, such as farmers, remain food, nutritional and income insecure, and hence remain in poverty. In addition, the focus of current academic programmes on ILT is limited and the general opinion among producers that IL has low performance potential hampers its efficient utilization. The potential of IL needs to be appreciated since the livestock forms an important repository of genetic diversity, which could be improved using innovative technologies.
